Apgar score

Newborn assessment at 1 + 5 minutes after birth (and 10 min if 5-min was < 7). Five components × 0-2 points = 0-10.

A — Appearance (color)
P — Pulse (heart rate)
G — Grimace (reflex irritability to suction/stim)
A — Activity (muscle tone)
R — Respiration

Note:Apgar is not used to direct resuscitation (NRP algorithm is). It is a retrospective assessment. Score < 7 at 5 min repeat at 10/15/20 min; correlates with neonatal mortality + cerebral palsy if persistently low. Education only.
